Matsuyama notches second PGA TOUR title of 2024 at FedEx St. Jude Championship

Presidents Cup teams taking shape heading into BMW Championship

MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada – Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama picked up the 10th win of his PGA TOUR career and second of the 2024 season on Sunday after birdieing the final two holes to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. Matsuyama heads to this week’s BMW Championship ranked No. 3 in the FedExCup, but No. 1 in the International Team standings, with the top six players for both Presidents Cup teams set to be locked in following Sunday’s final round outside of Denver.

Entering the week at TPC Southwind ranked No. 8 in the FedExCup standings, Matsuyama built a five-shot lead through three rounds with a 17-under 193 total, leading two-time winner and rookie Nick Dunlap heading into Sunday’s final round.

Matsuyama maintained his five-shot lead early throughout the final round before going 4-over on Nos. 12-15 including a double-bogey on the short par-4 15th to fall one back of a surging Viktor Hovland. The 32-year-old quickly righted the ship with a birdie on No. 17 to regain the outright lead by one shot over Hovland and Xander Schauffele, then cemented the win with a stellar approach to 18 and a 6-foot birdie putt for the victory.

The win marked the 10th of his PGA TOUR career and further cemented his spot atop the International Team standings, where he is followed by Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Jason Day, Adam Scott and Byeong Hun An.

With Canadian icon Mike Weir serving as captain of the International Team, much attention has been put on the top players from the host country for this year’s Presidents Cup. With one week to go before automatic qualifiers and two weeks until captain’s picks, there are currently five Canadian players inside the top 15 in the International Team standings: Corey Conners (7), Nick Taylor (11), Adam Hadwin (12), Taylor Pendrith (13), and Mackenzie Hughes (15).

The 2024 International Team will be comprised of six (6) automatic qualifiers and (6) Captain’s picks, with the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) being used to determine the former. The automatic qualifiers will be the top six eligible international players in the OWGR after completion of the 2024 BMW Championship.

The biggest moves of the week came from Denny McCarthy (No. 15) and Billy Horschel (No. 17), who moved up five and four spots, respectively. McCarthy, who was the first-round co-leader at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, is looking to make his first Presidents Cup, while Horschel is hoping to compete for the U.S. Team a second time after making his debut in 2022.

The 2024 U.S. Team will be comprised of six (6) automatic qualifiers and six (6) Captain’s picks, with a weighted system based on FedExCup Points from January 1, 2023, through August 25, 2024.
